Intensive Outpatient is a day and/or nighttime treatment program that employs
an integrated and individualized schedule of recognized substance abuse/mental
health treatment modalities.
Intensive Outpatient is a treatment approach developed as an alternative
to inpatient treatment. It includes the major psychiatric evaluation and
treatment modalities (both psychosocial and biological) that are usually
found in a comprehensive inpatient program. It is designed for voluntary
patients with mental health and/or substance abuse problems who require
intensive and multidisciplinary treatment that is a flexible, less costly
and less restrictive form of treatment.
Intensive Outpatient can be utilized by individuals who are mentally or
emotionally impaired, but who can be maintained in the community at least
part of each day, and present little risk of imminent danger to themselves
or others. The purpose of the Intensive Outpatient Program is to provide
a transition or "bridge" between treatment in the hospital and the resuming
of community or social activities.
The goals of the Intensive Outpatient programs are to provide psychiatric
and/or substance abuse treatment to individuals in a less restrictive setting
than an inpatient unit. The benefits of this type of care include: Lessening
the disruption of social, family, and community ties; allowing the patient
to test new skills in a more neutral environment than an inpatient hospital
setting; providing treatment milieu that provides flexibility in the numbers
of treatment days per week, thus allowing a patient to pursue other activities,
such as shortening of the inpatient stay, or preventing the need for full
hospitalization.
The Intensive Outpatient Program will provide:
1. Resolution or stabilization of short- term Program conditions, usually
within two (2) to eight (8) weeks.
2. Rehabilitation of patients with social or vocational deficits related
to their psychiatric and/or substance abuse illness with the goal of enhancing
productivity in vocational or other work related activities.
3. Control of symptoms and maintenance of a functional level to avoid further
deterioration or hospitalization.
4. Diagnosis of persons for whom an extended or direct observation is necessary
to identify problem areas, monitor medications, and formulate a treatment
plan.
5. Stress reduction and a mobilization of the patient's own strengths and
resources.
6. Education geared toward assisting the patient to cope more effectively
with future crisis.
7. Positive experience geared toward enhancing self-esteem and promoting
effective patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving.
